  Alexei

  “This shit is getting ridiculous.”

Alexei tried to lower his voice as much as possible. Amelia was asleep in the next room, and she always got scared when he spoke Russian in an angry tone.

“Calm down, Alex. Saylor and I are fine. We’re just laying low for a while.”

Stone sounded calm, but that didn’t mean anything. He was a businessman; he knew exactly how to mask whatever was truly going on. Alexei let a puff of air out of his nose as he surveyed the apartment. Anxious hazel eyes anchored him in place. Seated on the small couch, Kaelyn was staring at him with furrowed brows trying to gauge from his reactions how the conversation was going. He gave her a brief smile and nodded to reassure her that everything was fine, but she looked skeptical. He took his attention back to the call,

“Still… Those sons of whores need to pay. Nobody shoots a Testova and gets away with it.”

That wasn’t strictly true. He’d lost count of how many times someone had shot at him, but Stone wasn’t part of that life. He should have never been put in that position. When I find that son of a bitch, I’m going to make him pay for everything he’s done…

Stone let out a deep chuckle that reverberated through the phone, “Except our beloved uncle? Tell me, are you keeping Kaelyn and Amelia safe?”

“You asked me to do that, didn’t you? Would I break my word?”

“I know, but Saylor is just worried. They targeted her once. What if they target her sister?”

“I’m protecting them, Stone. Do you not trust me?”

“Alexei… You know I do….” He sighed. “It’s just… I’m worried about you too, you know.”

Damn. Why did he have to go and say that?

The last thing Alexei needed was another person to grieve over. He couldn’t let his brother think that any of this was too much for him to handle. He couldn’t let him know how fucking terrified he was of their uncle or how much misery and carnage that sadistic bastard could unleash.

This was so much easier when I only had to worry about saving my own skin. Alexei quickly shook that thought out of his head; that was the old him talking, the one that didn’t give a damn about anyone or anything. Now, I care, he thought, watching as Kaelyn flipped through a magazine absentmindedly to distract herself.

“Thanks for your concern, but I think I can handle myself. I’m the one who knows how to kill a man twenty-three different ways using only my bare hands.”

Stone let out a sound that was a mix between an exasperated sigh and chuckle.

“Look, I know you can handle it, but just think about what I told you before, okay? I think it’s time.”

Now, it was Alexei’s turn to sound exasperated. He didn’t want to talk about that. He didn’t want to talk about anything, really. He knew he was bullshitting his way out of the conversation, but he just wanted it to be over.

“Look, I gotta go. I need to take another look around the block to make sure it’s still safe. Do svidanya.”

It was hard to tell, but Alexei thought Stone wanted to say more and knew that Alexei was just trying to end the conversation. But there was nothing more for him to say, so he just said goodbye and hung up.

Alexei let the phone dangle at his side for a while. He knew Kaelyn was looking at him, waiting for him to tell her what was going on, but he just needed a minute to gather his thoughts. Conversations with his brother were always complicated. His life was always complicated. He wondered if there would ever be a time when everything could just be normal and not a terribly tangled mess.

  “Alex?” Kaelyn said questioningly.

He finally turned around with a smile on his face. “Everything is fine. They’re both safe.”

She breathed a sigh of relief and let her head fall back on the couch as though the weight of the world had just left her shoulders. She was always worried now and that, in turn, worried him. It was just like his brother – a constant cycle of worry and fear that no one seemed to be able to break.

It has only been a month since his brother was shot by those bastards Dominic and Aaric. Or as they disguised themselves, Edvard and Gordon of the FBI. His uncle, Senya Ruskov, has been hunting him ever since he left the bratva. Stone got caught in the middle of all this shit, and now Saylor and Kaelyn were getting heat, too.

Too many people getting hurt or having their lives turned completely upside down, all because of him. How many more people would have to suffer before he faced his uncle and one of them chokes the life out of the other? Was this the price he had to pay for choosing to wipe away the red from his past?

All he’d ever craved was escape.

Escape from the bullets, the knives, and the proper way to skin someone for information, and the how to turn even the simplest everyday item into a weapon. He was starting to doubt that that was possible; he could never escape. Because even if somehow, he managed to get rid of his uncle, there was no way to get rid of the past that haunted him, or nightmares that never ceased to visit his sleep.

Alexei wanted to protect his brother from all of that. But he couldn’t. Stone suffered for Alexei’s actions, and now he couldn’t stop picturing it; the metal bullet piercing Stone’s flesh and sinking deep into his body, the splatter of blood, the pain, the screams, so close to death.

  Too close.

He should’ve been there. To take the bullet for him, to put a bullet in those little shits, anything. He had known Dominic and Aaric, trained with them, understood just how ruthless and skilled they were. It was a miracle Stone had survived.

  Alexei hated miracles.

Now, he owed the universe something for saving his brother’s life. You can’t trust a miracle. What you can trust are your eyes staring ahead of you, your feet taking you where you need to be, and the gun in your hand as you pulled the trigger.

That conversation hadn’t helped, just like every other conversation with Stone. Alexei felt a deep pit in his stomach that could’ve only grown there from a lifetime with the Bratva. Paranoia and fear danced their way across his mind, ensuring that a moment of peace would never be guaranteed. The thought of what could happen to his brother if he was ever found made bile rise in the back of his throat, and a slow tremor ran through his fingers.

They’d never even been close, never had the chance to be brothers.

But now, Senya was threatening both of them, sending every arsenal and man at his disposal. Alexei finally felt as though he had a brother. Had someone to care about him no matter what and have his back, always. Nothing could bring two people together more than a common enemy who just so happened to be an uncle who wanted them dead.

Not just them, though, Alexei thought, as he watched Kaelyn go to Amelia’s room to check on her. That was what was truly uniting the brothers; protecting those they cared about. Because the gruesome images Alexei’s mind conjured up were not only limited to Stone. What could happen to Kaelyn or Amelia if they were found also kept him up all night.

A thousand scenarios, and not in any one was he able to save them. A plague of worries and fears and doubts echoed through every crevice of his mind and there was nothing he could do to shake them out. This was
uncharted territory. Senya hadn’t exactly taught him how to deal with emotions back at the bratva.

The only emotions one could have were anger and loyalty to the boss. The joke was on him though, for that capacity of unbending loyalty that he instilled in Alexei turned on him. It’s now for the people who he loved, the people he would give his life over and over again for, and he had no qualms about ripping out the throats of anyone who proved to be a threat to them.

In that second, Kaelyn walked back into the room, giving Alexei a tentative smile.

  “Is everything okay?”

That was the question of the century, wasn’t it?

  Was everything okay?

He almost laughed out loud, but the last thing he needed was for her to know just how messed up and dangerous their situation was.

“I just told you. Everything is fine.”

She took her seat on the couch again and beckoned him to come closer.

“I’m not talking about Stone and Saylor. I’m talking about you. You look troubled.”

As he sat next to her, he said with sarcasm dripping from his voice. “Well, it may just be my shit uncle who’s out to kill me and my brother. But I don’t know if that’s troubling enough.”

She gave him an unamused look, “Alex…”

“I know, I know. You’re only trying to help. How’s Amelia doing?”

“Sleeping soundly. Now, stop trying to change the subject. You know you can talk to me about whatever it is.”

That was exactly it. He knew she’d listen to him and comfort him, tell him that she may not believe in much but she believed that he would always be able to save them. Those thoughts just stopped being reassuring. In fact, they only serve to remind him of his shortcomings, how he couldn’t help his brother.

What if he didn’t have what it takes? What if he tried but all the chaos, misery, pain and death just caught up with them? What if they ran, and kept running for the rest of their lives because he wasn’t actually brave enough to face the man who made him what he was? What if he failed?

Kaelyn was still looking at him expecting an answer, so he had to come up with something really quick.

“I’m just worried about Stone that’s all.”

She looked at him sympathetically, “I know how you feel. Every moment I find myself thinking about Saylor and what she’d been through and I just want to go to her and protect her. I know that’s stupid. I know I can’t actually do anything to protect her, but I feel like I should be doing something.”

Alexei turned her to face him. “You are doing something. You’re protecting your daughter.”

  “No, you’re protecting my daughter.”

“And you’re her rock! Without you here, things would’ve crumbled a lot faster and a long time ago.”

She looked skeptical, but he knew he couldn’t stop. He couldn’t let her think that she was useless, when she was the only thing keeping him sane right now.

“Kaelyn, you give Amelia hope. You give me hope. And we need that if we’re ever going to beat Senya and be safe. You’re shielding her from all this horribleness so she doesn’t grow thinking the world is nothing but a cruel place. You’re her home, and being safe – staying safe – is the only way to make that home grow.”

Tears briefly welled in her eyes before she wiped them away and whispered.

“Thank you. I don’t know what we could have ever done without you.”

He smiled and leaned over, kissing her softly, wanting nothing more than to lose himself in her. She pulled back slightly with a giggle and asked,

“Do you think Stone suspected anything? On the phone call?”

Alexei merely smiled and shook his head before wrapping his arms around her and kissing her like she was his final breath on earth.

  2

  Kaelyn

Alexei’s lips touched hers and for a second everything disappeared. The noise was silenced, the walls vanished, the ground spilled from beneath them and all that was there was him.

God, that man knew how to kiss.

Kaelyn’s hands came up to cup his face, running her fingers through the light stubble on his cheeks. The press of his lips was soft at first, a gentle touch against hers, but when her arms wrapped around his neck, he couldn’t hold it in any longer. His kiss turned passionate, furious, desperate, and she was all too glad to return it full force.

With his arms wrapped around her back, he pulled her into his lap and bit her lip. She gasped which gave him full access to slip his tongue into her mouth. The kiss deepened and as his tongue massaged hers and everything in her was taken with his taste. His hands roamed her body as though he was his salvation, the only thing anchoring him to this world.

  Oh, it was heavenly.

His touch was light, yet everywhere it passed over her body, a fire followed. As they moved over her, his hands traced an inexplicable pattern, seared a path in flame all over her. And she loved it.

Alexei moved his lips to her jaw and the fire spread. His mouth was hot as he left wet kisses all the way down to her neck and to that sweet spot behind her ear. He nibbled on it and Kaelyn finally let out a moan she’d been keeping in. She could feel him smile against her skin, as he continued his path of destruction and pleasure down her neck, leaving hot, wet open-mouthed kisses. She moved to straddle him as she dug her fingers through his hair. Having gone down one side of her neck, and come up on the other side, she pulled him roughly to her lips.

He was coaxing her into him as though she could have had any doubts about letting their bodies intertwine. He pulled her closer to him until their chests were pressed against each other and she could feel every breath, every heartbeat, and all she could think was that we're alive. Alive.

It wasn’t enough. She wanted more.

  No, needed more.

There wasn’t even a hairbreadth between them, but she still pulled him closer, as though she wanted to merge them into one. She ran her hands down his back and felt every muscle tense and twitch at her touch. Grinding on his erection through his pants, she let out another low moan and moved to unbutton his shirt.

“Wait.” He stopped her hands. “Let’s go to your room. We might wake up Amelia like this.”

Kaelyn only nodded breathlessly. She moved to get up, but yelped when she found herself being lifted up by him. Her legs were wrapped around his waist and his arms under her as he carried her to the bedroom, never once letting their lips get separated. He kicked the door open and lowered her onto the bed. For a second, she just stared up at him.

His lips parted as he panted, chest rising and falling, and the prominent bulge in his pants. She smiled up at him and bit her lip, as he lowered himself on top of her and ran his nose down her neck, taking in a deep breath.

“God, you’re beautiful.” He groaned as he captured her lips again in a fervent kiss that stole the air from her lungs.

She couldn’t breathe, but she didn’t care as her body filled up with him – kissing her, touching her, making her feel the way no man had ever done before. Quickly, she moved to unbutton his shirt and pushed it off his broad shoulders. She then ran her hands down his chest, following the light hair spattered down his defined abs to the V sneaking its way into his pants. She cupped him through the fabric and he hissed out a breath. Before anything else, he was back on top of her, kissing her lips, her jaw, her neck, and tugging on her top to get it over her head.

The pesky thing was refusing to get out of the way, that when it finally came off, it went with a nasty rip. But neither of them noticed.

Kaelyn was too busy focusing on his lips, his dangerous lips, that continued to torment her, scorching her neck as they went. Then, he took her skin between his teeth and sucked. She gasped and arched her back into him. This allowed him to slip his hand under her and unhook her bra. Tossing it aside, he wasted no time in taking one of her hard nipples into his mouth and sucking on it.

She moaned and grasped at the sheets as his hand kneaded and massaged her
other breast. He took his sweet, sweet time before he switched and she could almost feel herself getting hotter by the second.

When he was sure her breasts had gleaned enough of his attention, he moved to her stomach, kissing and licking his way down her body. His tongue followed an invisible pattern that had her writhing on the bed, moaning his name over and over again. He finally reached her waistline and, wasting no time, pulled off her pants and underwear in one fell swoop.

Alexei looked up at her with a gleam in his eyes and a soft smirk on his lips, and when their eyes met, a tremor ran through her entire body. He brought his finger to her slit and ran it from opening to slit, and she let out a deep moan. His finger was coated with her juices and he put it in his mouth, sucking them off, never once breaking eye contact. That elicited a deep moan from both of them.

Slowly bringing his face closer and closer to her center and whispered. “You taste so. Fucking, good.”

With that he began his assault on her. His tongue was hot and so was she, and nothing had ever felt more like heavenly fire. He ran it on the same path his finger had taken, licking her into a climax.

  She felt one already.

It was only Alexei who could make her come so fast. He took her clit completely into his mouth and sucked on it. She buried her hands in his hair and wrapped her thighs around his head, everything else ceasing to exist at that moment.. He continued his vigorous onslaught of licking, nibbling and sucking until she felt it rising inside her. She screamed his name as the orgasm hit her, and her body shook with the intensity of it.

After her climax came to an end, she sank down onto the bed, breathless. But Alexei wasn’t done. Kaelyn watched with hooded eyes as he unzipped his pants and slid them and his boxers down. For a moment, he just stood there, hand around the base of his cock, before climbing on top of her and kissing her as though he needed her to breathe.

He slowly inched his way inside her until Kaelyn yelled out in pleasure as she felt him fill up every single part of her. He began thrusting deep and hard into her, and she wasted no time in moving her hips to thrust back. He had one arm behind her back and another holding her thigh, keeping her legs open as he pounded into her. Her hands traveled across his chest and back, dragging her nails over his skin, eliciting a deeply groaned. “Fuck!”
